This particular finch species can be recognized by its distinctive rounded black tail and seasonal reddish bill. The male's upper body is mostly red, except for a black eye-stripe, lower belly, and wings. The breeding male also has a red rump with white spots on the body and wing feathers. In comparison, the non-breeding male has a less vibrant coloration but retains the red rump, while the female is even duller with fewer white spots on its feathers.
