Pionus parrots, found in Mexico, Central and South America, are medium-sized and easily recognizable by their chunky body, short square tail, and bare eye ring that may vary in color. While they may seem similar to Amazon parrots, they are smaller and have a deeper wing-stroke during flight. Their feathers, although subtly colored, have a dazzling iridescence when in bright light. All Pionus species have vibrant red undertail coverts, with one species, the blue-headed parrot, having its scientific name referencing this feature. Both male and female Pionus parrots share similar physical characteristics.
